Best Linux Distros for VPS & Game Server Hosting

Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS — Best for Beginners

Ubuntu Server is the most popular VPS operating system for good reason. It has the largest community, the most tutorials and StackOverflow answers, and first-class support from game server software. Most game server setup guides assume Ubuntu. LTS versions get 5 years of security updates. For anyone new to Linux or hosting their first game server, Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS is the safe, well-supported choice. It includes Snap package manager, systemd, netplan networking, and excellent hardware support out of the box.

Debian 12 'Bookworm' — Best for Stability

Debian is the foundation Ubuntu is built on. Debian prioritizes stability over new features — packages are older but thoroughly tested. Debian 12 includes Linux kernel 6.1 LTS, perfect for production servers where reliability matters more than latest features. Minimal RAM overhead (256-512 MB for the OS alone). If you want a server that runs for months without issues, Debian is the choice. It's also lighter than Ubuntu — leaving more RAM for your game servers.

Rocky Linux 9 / AlmaLinux 9 — RHEL-Compatible

Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux are community-maintained, binary-compatible alternatives to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). They're the go-to choice for enterprise environments and hosting companies. Benefits: SELinux for advanced security, 10-year support lifecycle, dnf package manager, and enterprise-grade stability. If you're familiar with CentOS (now discontinued), Rocky/Alma are the direct replacements. Best for: production environments where RHEL compatibility is required.

Arch Linux — Best for Maximum Performance

Arch Linux is a rolling-release distribution — you always get the latest kernel, drivers, and packages. This means better hardware support and performance optimizations, but also more frequent updates and occasional manual intervention. For game servers, the latest kernel often includes performance improvements for networking and CPU scheduling. Arch is recommended only for experienced Linux admins who are comfortable troubleshooting. The AUR (Arch User Repository) provides easy access to game server management tools.

Alpine Linux — Ultra-Lightweight

Alpine Linux uses musl libc and BusyBox instead of glibc and GNU coreutils — the entire OS fits in 130 MB. RAM overhead: 50-100 MB. Boots in seconds. Perfect for containerized game servers (Docker) or running multiple lightweight servers on one VPS. Caveat: musl libc can cause compatibility issues with some game server software (most expect glibc). Test your server software on Alpine before deploying to production.

Our Recommendation by Use Case

First game server: Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS. Production game network: Debian 12. Enterprise/hosting company: Rocky Linux 9. Experienced admin wanting maximum performance: Arch Linux. Containerized/Docker game servers: Alpine Linux. All these distros are available for one-click install on our VPS plans. Can't decide? Start with Ubuntu — you can always reinstall or migrate later.
