How to Set Up Your First Minecraft Server

Choosing the Right Plan

Before you deploy your first Minecraft server, you need to pick a plan that matches your player count and mod requirements. For a vanilla server with 2-5 players, 3 GB of RAM is the sweet spot. If you plan to run modpacks like Feed The Beast or All The Mods, start with at least 6 GB. Our Minecraft III plan (6 GB DDR5, 3 CPU threads) handles most modded setups comfortably.

Selecting Your Server Version

Minecraft servers support every Java Edition version from 1.8 through the latest release. From the control panel, navigate to the Startup tab and select your desired version from the dropdown. For the widest plugin compatibility, PaperMC is recommended — it includes performance patches while maintaining full Bukkit/Spigot plugin support. If you need Forge mods, select the Forge installer for your version instead.

Installing Plugins and Modpacks

Use the One-Click Installer in your control panel to deploy popular modpacks instantly. For individual plugins, upload the .jar file to the /plugins folder via SFTP or the built-in file manager, then restart your server. Always verify plugin compatibility with your server version before installing. Essential plugins for any server include EssentialsX (commands, warps, economy), LuckPerms (permissions), and WorldEdit (building tools).

Configuring Server Properties

The server.properties file controls core gameplay settings. Key values to adjust: set 'difficulty' to normal or hard, 'max-players' to your plan's capacity, 'view-distance' to 8-12 (higher values consume more RAM), and 'enable-command-block' to true if you plan to use command blocks. Set 'white-list' to true and add trusted players to prevent griefing. Always restart the server after changing these values.

Setting Up Automated Backups

Our platform snapshots your server every 6 hours with 7-day rolling retention. You can also create manual backups from the control panel before making major changes. To restore a backup, go to the Backups tab, select the snapshot you want, and click Restore. The process takes 30-60 seconds depending on world size. We recommend creating a manual backup before installing new mods or running server-wide commands.

Connecting to Your Server

Once deployed, you'll receive an IP address and port in your control panel dashboard. Share the IP with your friends and they can connect by adding it to their Minecraft multiplayer server list. For a custom domain, use the free subdomain feature to create something like myworld.cyberservers.live. This is easier for players to remember and looks more professional on server listing sites.
