Minecraft Server Version Comparison — Which Should You Run?

Compare Minecraft server versions from 1.8 to 1.21. Features, performance, plugin support, and which version is best for different server types.

1.21 (Current)

Latest features: Trial Chambers, Crafter blocks, Wolf Armor, Breeze mob. Requires Java 21. Best for: new servers wanting the latest content. Performance: 25-30% more RAM than 1.16. Plugin compatibility: most major plugins updated for 1.21.

1.20 Trails & Tales

Features: Cherry Grove biomes, archaeology system, Sniffer mob, armor trims. Requires Java 17+. Stable and well-supported by plugins. Good balance of modern features and plugin compatibility. Most SMP and Lifesteal servers run 1.20.

1.19 Wild Update

Features: Deep Dark, Warden, Ancient Cities, Mangrove Swamps. Requires Java 17. Still popular for servers wanting Warden mechanics. Plugin ecosystem is mature for 1.19.

1.16-1.18

Nether Update (1.16), Caves & Cliffs (1.17-1.18). These versions have the broadest plugin support and lowest RAM requirements. Best for: large networks with 100+ plugins, servers targeting low-end clients, or specific game modes built for these versions.

Our Recommendation

New servers: launch on 1.20 or 1.21. Existing servers: upgrade only after verifying all critical plugins support the target version. Test on a staging server before upgrading production. CyberNex control panel lets you switch versions with one click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I always run the latest version?

Not necessarily. If your server's plugins and community are stable on 1.20, upgrading to 1.21 only makes sense if players want the new features. Prioritize stability over being on the cutting edge.

Can players on different versions join?

ViaProxy allows cross-version connections. GeyserMC lets Bedrock players join. But for the main server, all players need to be on the same version. Pick a version that your community can all access.
