TeamSpeak Server Setup — Complete Administration Guide

Set up and manage a TeamSpeak 3/5 voice server. Permission system, channel management, security best practices, and community integration.

TeamSpeak Server Basics

TeamSpeak servers provide low-latency voice communication for gaming communities. TS3 is the established standard (stable, widely supported). TS5 is the new version (modern UI, better codec, backward compatible). Our plans support both. Server queries: you receive a unique port (9987 default for voice) and admin token (privilege key) via email. Use the privilege key within 24 hours to claim server admin.

Permission System

TeamSpeak uses a hierarchical permission system. Server groups: Server Admin (full control), Normal (basic user), Guest (restricted). Channel groups: Channel Admin, Operator, Voice (speak only). Channel permissions: join power (who can enter), subscribe power (who can see channel), speak power (who can talk), and needed talk power (minimum to speak). Set up groups in the server settings. Best practice: create role-specific groups (Staff, Member, Guest, Clan Leader) and assign permissions to groups, not individuals.

Channel Structure

Organize channels logically: Lobby (AFK channel, auto-move after 30 min), Gaming (game-specific channels: Valorant, CS2, Minecraft, FiveM), Social (general chat, music bot, memes), Staff (private admin channel), and Clan/Team rooms (password-protected for specific groups). Use spacers (---) for visual organization. Set channel descriptions with rules and information. Limit maximum clients per channel for large communities (e.g., 10 per voice channel for voice quality).

Security Best Practices

Enable server query flood protection. Change default serverquery ports. Set anti-flood settings: max connections per IP. Enable brute force protection. Use unique, strong privilege keys. Regularly review permission assignments — remove elevated permissions from inactive users. Keep server updated (check for updates monthly). Back up server settings and user database weekly. Use our DDoS-protected IP to prevent voice disruption during attacks.

Community Integration

Integrate with Discord: use a TeamSpeak-Discord bridge bot for cross-platform chat. Display TeamSpeak server status on your website via server query. Connect FiveM/Minecraft servers to TeamSpeak for in-game voice integration. Create a welcome message with server rules and staff contacts. Use music bots (SinusBot) for background music channels. TeamSpeak + Discord together cover all community communication needs — voice on TS, text and events on Discord.

Frequently Asked Questions

TeamSpeak vs Discord for voice?

TeamSpeak: lower latency (optimized for voice), better audio quality (Opus codec with higher bitrates), more permission control, no data collection concerns. Discord: free, no setup, integrated chat, screen sharing. Use TeamSpeak for serious gaming (competitive, large communities), Discord for casual/social. Many communities use both.

How many users can my TeamSpeak server handle?

Our plans scale with slots: Starter (32 slots), Medium (64 slots), Large (128 slots), Enterprise (256+). Server performance scales linearly with slot count. 32-slot plan handles 32 concurrent users at maximum audio quality.
